REGENERATIVE HARVESTING PRACTICES
We hand harvest from regenerative kelps forests and intertidal zones along the coast of California.
The habitat of Giant Kelp dominates the kelp forests from Baja California northwards to San Francisco on the Northwest coast of the United States. This species of Kelp is very unique to this region of the world’s coastline due to unique wind activity, currents, and water temperatures. Upwelling from wind and the California Current drives nutrient rich cold water to the warmer surface, supplying the kelp with vital minerals.
Giant kelp is a perennial plant, living up to 8 years and growing 2 feet a day. Each individual plant can grow over 100 feet long with some kelp forests reaching hundreds of yards wide.
Giant Kelp’s reproductive organs exist at the base of the plant so harvesting never endangers the species ability to reproduce.
